Why Maryborough
Maryborough is one of Queensland's oldest provincial cities and its Mary River port history is still visible in the streetscape. The Portside precinct holds the old customs house and wharf-era buildings, and Queens Park is a long-established public garden on the riverbank.
The Mary Poppins connection
P. L. Travers, who wrote Mary Poppins, was born in Maryborough in 1899. The city leans into it — there is a statue, a themed festival, and enough of a trail through town to build a morning around, which makes this a strong family and school-group day.
The Time Cannon
Maryborough fires a time cannon at one o'clock, a heritage ritual that draws a small crowd. It is a fixed point in the day, so we plan lunch and the morning around it rather than hoping to arrive in time.
