What River Heads is
River Heads is a small settlement at the mouth of the Mary River, about 20 km south of Hervey Bay. It is the mainland departure point for barges and passenger ferries to K'gari from the Hervey Bay side.
Why it needs planning
Parking is limited and the queue builds in school holidays and peak season. Boats do not wait. We plan the transfer backwards from the operator's check-in cut-off rather than the sailing time, and we build in buffer for the queue.
The return
Return sailings set the finish time for your day, and they can shift. Give us the scheduled return and the operator contact, and we will plan the collection around the realistic window.
Coaches cannot cross

How long is the drive from Hervey Bay?
About 20 km and roughly 20 minutes in normal conditions. We add buffer for the terminal queue in peak periods.
Can you wait while we are on the island?
For a day trip it is usually more economical to release the vehicle and have it return for your sailing. We will price both options.
What if we miss the barge?
Contact the operator immediately about the next sailing, and call us. We will do what we can to re-time the return leg subject to availability.
