When to see whales in Hervey Bay
The short answer: the Australian winter and early spring. The useful answer takes a bit longer.
The season, broadly
Humpback whales pass Hervey Bay on their southern migration, and the local season broadly runs from around late July into early November. The middle of that window is generally the most reliable. Migration timing shifts year to year, so treat any published date range as a guide and confirm with your vessel operator.
Why Hervey Bay specifically
K'gari shelters the bay from the open ocean, creating unusually calm water. Humpbacks use Platypus Bay, on the island's western side, as a resting and socialising stop rather than simply passing through. That behaviour — whales lingering rather than transiting — is what makes the experience here different, and it is part of why the World Cetacean Alliance named Hervey Bay the world's first Whale Heritage Site in October 2019.
What changes across the season
Earlier in the season you are more likely to see whales moving through. Later, mothers with calves become more common as they rest before continuing south. Neither is guaranteed — this is wildlife, not a timetable — but it is worth knowing if you have a preference.
Planning the day
Most vessels depart Urangan Boat Harbour in the morning. Book the boat first; everything else times off it. Then work backwards from the operator's check-in cut-off, not the departure time. In peak season the harbour car park fills early, which is the main practical reason groups charter.

Whale season overlaps with the Queensland winter school holidays and the drier, milder part of the year on the Fraser Coast, which is why accommodation and charter availability both tighten. If your dates are fixed, book transport when you book the boat.
